Journey into the heart of the Sahara in Algeria with experienced local guides
This unusual 10 day Algeria trip with an expert local guide takes you into the very heart of the Sahara, experiencing days of travel in some of the world’s most remote landscapes and meeting the people who live there.
Starting in the bustling capital of Algiers the journey includes an explore of the labyrinthine like Kasbah of Algiers before heading deep into the country’s Saharan interior, taking in ancient oasis towns along the way and a bounty of fascinating Roman sites such as the spectacular mountainous Roman ruins of Djemila – one of the greatest sets of Roman remains in North Africa.
You’ll also visit the dramatic ravine town of Constantine, the oasis town of Djanet and the jaw-dropping Tassili N’ajjer National Park in the desert region, where there will be chance to camp.
Within the national park there is an incredible array of scenery and experiences, including the stone forest at Tikoubaouine, El Oued, the serene desert ponds at Guelta of Essendilene, 7,000-year-old ancient rock engraving “la vache qui pleure” (the crying cow) and a traditional Tuareg tea ceremony. Visitors coming from afar may well feel like you’ve landed in another world with its otherworldly landscapes, vast dunes and nomadic communities.
Learn about life in this remote and harsh landscape, spending time in the oasis town of Djanet, then finish with more time exploring Algiers.
