Women in Ocean Science – Restoring Coral Reefs in Raja Ampat
Original post: Another World Adventures
We’re delighted to share that Women in Ocean Science have been awarded funding through the Adventure Travel Conservation Fund following a nomination from Another World Adventures!
Building on Women in Ocean Science’s previous work in Raja Ampat, Indonesia this fund will enable them to train local women in marine conservation, diving, and ecosystem monitoring, while also restoring degraded coral reefs in critical manta ray habitats.
Who are Women in Ocean Science?
Women in Ocean Science is a registered charity, global network and community that tackles gendered issues in marine science and conservation to empower women to thrive in ocean-related careers.
If you don’t follow them on Instagram you should absolutely go and do so now! Their IG page is filled with inspiring women across the globe working to better understand and protect our oceans.
Here at Another World Adventures we’ve been long term supporters of their work, our co-founder Larissa Clark is a trustee on their advisory board, and we couldn’t think of a more deserving organisation to be awarded the fund.
Conservation through Women’s Empowerment in Raja Ampat.
Raja Ampat, located in West Papua, Indonesia, is renowned for its stunning biodiversity and pristine coral reefs. However, in recent years the reefs have been under threat from environmental degradation and pollution caused by over-tourism.
Overcrowded dive sites, boat anchors damaging coral reefs, irresponsible tour operators and improper waste disposal by tourists contribute to the degradation of these critical habitats.
The Women in Ocean Science project aims to empower local women to lead their community in marine conservation and champion sustainable practices. Conducting comprehensive training programs that provide them with the skills and knowledge needed for effective marine conservation and eco-tourism.
Travel For Good With The Adventure Travel Conservation Fund.
The Adventure Travel Conservation Fund is a non-profit that brings the Adventure Travel Industry together to directly fund local projects engaged in the conservation of unique natural and cultural resources of adventure travel destinations.
Once a year, the ATCF awards grants to organisations seeking conservation funding. As a member of the Adventure Travel Conservation fund we’re able to support the fund by nominating and voting on grant recipients and the financial support from our membership goes to fund the chosen conservation projects.
