Experience the UK by sea on a UK Sailing Adventure Staycation
Original post: Another World Adventures
It can be easy to focus on the land-based adventure opportunities in the UK when we have everything from snowy mountains and rolling moorland to ancient woodland and sandy beaches, but you might be missing out on one of the best ways to experience the British Isles: by sea!
As an island, we are spoilt with some of the best sailing opportunities in the world, all within easy access. Why not consider a UK sailing holiday as your next adventure? And for a lot of trips there is no sailing experience required!
Scotland is well-known for its fantastic sailing opportunities, but also offers the chance to visit some of the remotest UK islands. We think choosing a Scottish sailing adventure with a mix of on-land exploring and time learning the ropes at sea is a great way to spend your summer. Hikes, beaches and day sails are available on the Sail of the West Coast of Scotland – plus you’ll be based on a luxury yacht!
If you are looking for a unique way to explore the South West, you can explore the West County and Scilly Islands by sailing vessel. An ideal way to navigate one of the most popular holiday spots in the UK, joining this voyage has plenty of stops to visit the beautiful coastal towns that dominate the region with the benefit of a floating home each evening and no need to navigate busy single-track roads to travel from place to place. This trip is particularly suited to groups of friends or families.
If both of these experiences sound like they would be up your street, we have you covered. A voyage from Plymouth to Oban will not only give you access to the South West and Scotland, but also take in the magical Caledonian Canal on the way. Keep your eyes peeled and you may even spot the Loch Ness Monster!
Still need to add more? The Sail Britain Summer Sailing Tour will not disappoint: join for one leg or the whole experience and get the best of what the UK has to offer from the sea. It’s a full circumnavigation of the UK under sail and it even includes navigating the Thames to visit London by water. Three yachts will travel together so expect comradery and competition, and this adventure will also raise money for the Michaela School Sailing Project to help inner city children also take to the water.
I can’t imagine that you need any more persuading to choose a UK sailing staycation, but if you are still wanting to go further afield there are sailing opportunities that start in the UK but take you to different climes. Join a tall ship from the UK to Portugal for an ocean crossing (perfect for solo travellers in search of adventure) or check out our full list of sailing adventures for more inspiration!
